The project was to provide a tomb for the
remains of famine victims associated with and adjoining
'work house' which had to be relocated following development
works.
The composition consists of a double cube, one enclosed,
containing the remains, the other
open holding a 'famine bowl'. The open cube symbolises
those who survived the famine; the closed cube those
who did not.
The liner axis of the composition is East/West with
a vertical slot above the famine bowl. The opening has
been located so that at sunset on the Summer Solstice
a shaft of sunlight is cast
on the entrance door to the tomb. The composition is
classical in proportions but pays homage to our forefathers
and to Newgrange.
The texture and size of the limestone panels
seek to convey a 'scaleless' and timeless
quality to the memorial.
This project won an Award in 2007 by Royal Institute
of Architects of Ireland.
